The Reading of the Declaration of Independence in Easton, PA – 2023
Last Sunday Easton held Heritage Day in the Centre Square of town, which celebrates the birth of the USA. Heritage Day takes place on the weekend following the Fourth of July and the main event is a live reading of the Declaration of Independence. Easton was one of three cities where the Declaration of Independence was first read to the public back in 1776. The other two cities were Trenton, NJ and Philadelphia.
The DOI is brought to Centre Square by a group of men and women in period dress and reading commences at 12:00 noon, rain or shine. On most occasions the weather is pretty good, usually warm and sunny. Not so this year though. Heavy rain storms, complete with thunder and lighting moved into Easton literally just a few minutes before noon. I usually bring a camera or two to record the event and this year I brought my GoPro 11 and that was fortunate for me because I did not have to worry about the weather conditions at all with the waterproof GoPro. I shot two short videos which captured the beginning and end of the reading of the DOI.
