Hoboken Terminal Photos

During one of my recent trips to NYC I took quick trip over to Hoboken so I could snap a few shots of Manhattan’s West Side from the Jersey side of the Hudson. I took the Path train over to NJ and took a stroll through the historic Hoboken Terminal, one of my all-time favorite train stations. It was a Saturday when I visited so the station was largely vacant because the vast majority of the NJ Transit trains it serves only run Monday to Friday.

The Beaux-Arts style Rail and Ferry Terminal buildings were built in 1907. The building was designed by architect Kenneth M Murchison. A lot of work has been put in over the course of the last decade or so to restore this building. I remember what the terminal was like back in the 80’s and 90’s and was no where near as nice as it is now.

Van Vleck House and Gardens

I visited the Van Vleck House and Gardens in Montclair, New Jersey about 6 weeks ago. The 5.8 acre estate is open 365 days a year and entrance is free. It is a very tranquil and beautiful place. I have visited Gardens many times and always enjoy walking through the exquisite gardens.

Two Weeks with the iPhone SE

I have been in the market for a new phone for quite a while, but after much deliberation I finally pulled the trigger and purchased a new Apple iPhone SE two weeks ago. So far, I am very pleased it. I bought the 64GB $499.00 model and think it is a terrific value. I will write a more detailed review in a few weeks, but I think it the “little” SE delivers great performance. One of the best things about the phone is it’s 12 MP camera, the exact same camera that is the top of the line iPhone 6S has. The SE also uses the same high performance A9chip as the 6S.

I have already taken quite a few pictures with the SE. Here are a few of my favorites of the last weeks..

More of My Favorite Pictures of 2015

Whoa, it is almost April 2016! Here are 10 more of favorite pictures from 2015. Going forward I am going feature more of my favorite pictures from prior years. I’ve been taking digital pictures since 2001 and I have amassed a fairly large number of shots that I would like to share with others on this blog. For the past few years I have posted top 10 collections for each year and in some cases expanded that number of favorites. Other times I have featured groups of pictures that I took at a particular location or event. I plan to continue to do that, but I also plan on publishing more blog posts that feature just one photo, or small groups of photos and provide a more detailed description of the subject of the photo (s) than I have previously. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but sometimes it really enhances the value of the picture when you explain the story behind it.

Blizzard 2016: A few pictures from Easton. PA

I was wondering if we were ever going to get a real snow storm this winter. Mother Nature really did deliver this past weekend. The Lehigh Valley was buried with 30 plus inches of snow. I was able to capture a few scenes from our latest snow-apocalypse here in Easton, PA. I actually had to work the Saturday that the big storm hit. Fortunately, I live within walking distance of my place of work in Easton, PA, but the walk to and from the office was a bit more challenging than usual, although I must say I enjoyed the stark white imagery that storm created.

My Favorite Pictures of 2015: 1 to 10

Here are my 10 favorite pictures of 2015. I took quite a few pictures in 2015 and it was difficult for me to narrow down my favorites to 10 shots. Most of my pictures were taken in and around the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, where I now reside, as well as New York City and New Jersey. I’m going to post more of favorite pictures from 2015 soon because there were at least 10 or 15 another pictures that liked nearly as much as those included in this top 10. All pictures were taken with my trusty Canon S90.

Back in May I had an opportunity to make a day trip to Montclair, NJ to visit two sites which feature beautiful collections of flowers and other plants. I was originally going to post a few pictures from my trip back in May and I started composing this blog post back then, but I never made final choices among all the pictures I took and I just let the post sit in Draft status for the past few months. Anyway, just decided to select a few pictures a liked and finish this post up. I really did enjoy this trip. I lived in Montclair at different points in the 1980’s and 1990’s, but it had been long time since I visited the Gardens at Mountainside Park.

First stop was at the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens at Mountainside Park. The Irises are in bloom from May 15th to June 5th, so late May is an ideal time to visit. I would highly recommend a visit to Mountainside Park at that time of the year if you want view the Irises

Freight Train Crosses the Delaware River

I took this picture from the Easton, PA, at the point where the Lehigh River pours into the Delaware river. The photo was modified on my iPad by applying the Drama Filter from the Google Snapseed App.

HDR Pictures of the Bethlehem Steel Plant

I’ve been taking a lot pictures in recent weeks at Bethlehem Works, the former Bethlehem Steel plant in Bethlehem, PA. The historic plant was closed in 1995, after producing steel for roughly 140 years. Bethlehem Steel was once the number 2 producer of steel in the United States. The 160 acre site is currently in the midst of a remarkable transformation to multi-use site that includes new buildings and original structures from the plant which will be used for cultural, recreational, educational, entertainment and retail development.

It is quite awe inspiring to walk around the grounds of the former Industrial Giant. The mighty Bethlehem Steel produced steel that was used to construct some of the most iconic structures, buildings and bridges in the country, including the following:

The Golden Gate Bridge
The George Washington Bridge
The Hoover Dam
The Lincoln Tunnel
The Chrysler Building
Rockefeller Center
Waldorf Astoria

During both World War I and II Bethlehem Steel played a critical role in the war effort, producing munitions, parts for aircraft and the steel that was necessary to build over 1,000 warships for the U.S. Navy.

I have selected a few my favorite pictures and applied the Snapseed HDR filter to them.

The Bethlehem Steel Blast Furnaces at Twilight

This summer a 2,000 ft pedestrian walkway modeled on The Highline in New York City was opened. The Walkway is called the Hoover Mason Trestle and it was built on top of an elevated railway that was used transport iron ore to the blast furnaces.
