West Side Story..more pictures from my trip to NYC

The Jane Hotel
The Jane Hotel
I tried to see as much of New York as I could during my February trip back East, but I only had a few days in the city and most of that time was spent on the West Side of Manhattan. Not that I’m complaining, because I love the West Side neighborhoods. I stayed at The Jane Hotel, which is located at the western end of Jane Street in the West Village. I’ve stayed at the Jane a few times before and I always enjoy it. The hotel is both historic and a little quirky, but I love it.

Here are few more pictures of my favorite pictures from my NYC trip…

Visit to New York City

20140213-063459.jpg

I made a trip to New York City and the Lehigh Valley in PA last week to visit family and friends. I had a great time in both places and took quite a few pictures. The picture above is one my favorites. I love this view of Lower Manhattan from the Brooklyn Bridge. The striking Freedom Tower, aka World Trade Center 1, has redefined the skyline. Great to see that building nearly complete after all these years. I have seen the building on prior visits to NYC, but this was the first time I have seen it since the top floors were completed. If you blow up the picture below you will notice that there is one small section of the top of the building that is still exposed. Glass panes are still being installed on the top eastern corner of WTC 1, but other than that the exterior of the building seems to be finished.

I know that the design of the WTC 1 has not received universal praise, but I like it. I think WTC 1 projects power and strength and that the new World Trade Center complex gives lower Manhattan a true 21st Century look.

I took the PATH train over to Hoboken to take some pictures of WTC 1 from the west side of the Hudson. I will post more pictures soon.

My Favorite Pictures of 2013 (Group I)

I took quite a few pictures during 2013 and over the course of the last few weeks I reviewed them several times and picked my top 10, which I am presenting below. This is something I’ve done for the past few years. I probably had about 30 or so pictures that I seriously considered for my top 10 and I really like many that did not make the cut, so I am going to present at least 10 of those pictures in a future post. In 2012 all my pictures were from the San Diego area. I did not leave California in 2013, but I did a bit more traveling within the California Republic, including trips to San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Visit to Runyon Canyon Park

I jumped on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner at Santa Fe Station in downtown San Diego last Saturday and made the trip up to Los Angeles last weekend in order to visit a few of my favorite spots in that great city.

This time I made a point of setting aside some time to visit Runyon Canyon Park (RCP) in Hollywood. The park is 160 acres of natural terrain set in the Hollywood Hills. The high points in the park offer spectacular views of Los Angeles in all directions. I’ve known about RCP for years, but for a variety of reasons I never made the trip there. It was one of those places that felt I had to devote at least 3 or 4 hours to and I think I thought it harder to get to than it turned out to be. RCP is actually a pretty easy place to get to, even by mass transit, which is the way I usually get around when I visit LA. I took the LA Metro Red Line subway from Union Station in downtown LA to the Hollywood and Highland station. From there it is a fairly short 10 block walk to RCP.

Beautiful Clouds Over Balboa Park

I found the cloud formations over Balboa Park quite stunning yesterday (08/24/13). I’m glad I had my camera with me so I could capture a few images. I first noticed the clouds while waiting for the Trolly at Old Town. I was going to take the trolly to Little Italy and walk back home to Cortez Hill after I run a few errands in the Old Town area, but I decided to jump on the #10 Bus from there and got off at 5th Avenue in Hillcrest. From there I walked to the park and took a few pictures. Here are a few of my favorites…

Visit to Ocean Beach, Sutro Heights and The Lands End Trail in San Francisco

I made a short trip up to San Francisco a few days a ago. I had a few hours to spare before my flight back to San Diego so I took the MUNI train out to Ocean Beach from downtown S.F. and went on a little hike from Judah Street to Sutro Heights Park and then on to the Lands End Trail. I had never been to this part of San Francisco before, but I expected it to be very scenic and I was not disappointed. I took these pictures with my Canon S90 and slightly modified them by using the Snapseed App on my iPad. I applied the Drama filter to sharpen the colors a little bit.
