Is Palin Cranking Up 2012 Campaign?

Is Palin Cranking Up 2012 Campaign?.

John Ellis makes a strong case that Sarah Palin is a real threat to win the Republican nomination for POTUS in 2012. He also sees Romney as her chief rival, but doesn’t think Romney can find enough support among Republicans primary voters to defeat Palin. I disagree with him there. I think either one of them can ultimately win depending on how well they manage their respective campaigns. I would also argue that the field in the Republican Party is still wide open and one or more additional strong contenders may emerge to seriously challenge Palin and Romney.

Smart Growth in Los Angeles

The Hollywood W Hotel
I made a trip up to Los Angeles recently for few days and visited some of my favorite neighborhoods in the that city, including Hollywood, which continues to be changed by major new housing and hotel projects which are transforming that neighborhood into a much more desirable place to visit and live. The new W Hotel on Hollywood and Vine, built over a Metro Red Line subway stop is an impressive addition that serves as an excellent example of smart growth in an urban area.

NBA Summer 2010

I’m really looking forward to the next 2010-2011 NBA season the wake of the Lakers victory over the Celtics and the Miami Heat adding LeBron James and Chris Bosh to the roster.

I want to go on the record right now in stating that I still think the Lakers are the team to beat next season. I still don’t think Miami has the TEAM it needs to dethrone the Lakers. Maybe a few years from now, assuming the Heat add the right role players they will be the odd on favorites to win the championship but not next year.

UFC 116

UFC 116 has some pretty interesting fights on the card, but this event is really about the main event. The heavyweight battle between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin will be a true battle of titans. Both of these guys will probably be well above the 265 lbs weight limit come fight time.

This is a very difficult fight to call because both fighters are very skilled and both have KO power. I don’t think this fight will go past 2 rounds, one way or another, because both of these behemoths will likely be throwing bombs at each other with their huge fists.

I agree with conventional wisdom that Carwin has the edge in standup fighting and Lesnar probably has the edge on the ground with his world class wrestling ability.

Lesnar’s WWE antics definitely alienate a significant portion of the MMA fan base and I understand that, although I think he is an entertaining character. I also admire Lesnar because he is all business when it is fight time.

Despite the long lay off I think Lesnar will be sharp in this fight and I expect him to win by taking Carwin down and stopping him via ground and pound in the 2nd round. Will I be shocked if Carwin KO’s Lesnar? No. He is more than capable of doing that if Brock gives him an opening, but I think Lesnar will be very conscious of that power and try to take away Carwin striking advantage by putting this fight on the ground.

UFC 116 Post Event observations:

Well, the main event, Lesnar vs Carwin, certainly lived up to expectations. It was a great fight, and as I noted in my prediction, could indeed have gone either way. Shane Carwin came very close the KO’ing Lesnar in the first round with a brutal barrage of strikes and elbows that put Lesnar on his back and doing all he could to protect himself. Lesnar regroup between Rd 1 and Rd 2 and came out looking to take Carwin down, which he did fairly easily, using his world class wrestling ability. This where Lesnar a real advantage over most other heavyweights. Lesnar moved quickly to end the fight with a triangle choke that Carwin had no chance of breaking free from.

However, UFC 116 was memorable for far more than just the main event. There were at least 4 or 5 other fights on the 116 card that were exceptional, especially the Akiyama vs Leben fight. Chris Leben took the fight on two weeks notice and won in spectacular fashion in the closing seconds of the 3rd round.

NBA Finals 2010: Lakers vs Celtics

Down 3 games to 2 the Lakers certainly have their work cut out for them. This series has been very hard fought and has lived up to expectations. No surprise that it will go at least six games. I predicted that the Lakers would win in 7 games and I am sticking to my guns. Although I must say that I have been very impressed by the grit and determination of the Celtics. Boston point guard Rajon Rondo, in particular, has been extremely impressive imo.

Talk Radio super subs

Heard two excellent substitute radio talk show hosts today. Dwight Schultz, the actor (The A-Team series) filled in for Jerry Doyle and Doug Urbanski, a Hollywood producer, filled in for Rush Limbaugh. I heard both before and they continue to impress me. Both have a right of center perspective, but are funny, witty, knowledgeable and very at ease on the radio imo. I don’t think either one has any desire to do radio full time, but I think both would be successful if they chose to go into that line of work.

World Cup 2010 USA vs ENG

Much to my surprise I watched nearly the entire USA vs ENG match in the opening round of the World Cup and found it quite interesting. Maybe because the USA has actually fielded a pretty competitive squad. Posting a 1-1 tie vs the powerful squad from England seemed like a victory. I was particularly impressed by US goalkeeper Tim Howard. He played exceptionally well and was key to the US effort.

UFC 115

I’m not going to make any picks for UFC 115 because there are too many question marks on this card, especially the main event, featuring Chuck Liddell vs Rick Franklin. Both Liddell and Franklin are not anywhere near what they once were and who knows what kind of shape these guys will be in. Unfortunately, both former champs were KO’d in their last fights’.

The rest of the 115 card seems pretty weak to me. Frankly, this card seems to have a lot of no-names or guys are that have performed poorly in recent fights and are now just trying to stay in the UFC.
