iPad App Review: Tunein Radio

I recently purchased the Tunein Radio app for my iPad. The app enables you to listen to scores of radio stations from across the US and some foreign countries as well. I think the app is extremely well designed and is very easy to use. It divides the radio stations by genre and makes it easy to find just about any kind of music or talk radio content.

The app is only $1.99 and is a steal at that price.

I gave this app an 5 star rating on the Apple App Store.

The Academy Awards

I’m really looking forward to the Oscars because of the inordinate number of good films in contention top awards.  Here are my predictions for the major awards:

Best Picture: Seems to be a battle between The Social Network (TSN) and  The Kings Speech (TKS) .  Both are excellent films imo. I’ve also recently watched True Grit and The Fighter, and I think highly of those films as well. In a less competitive year those films might have been Oscar favorites.

I bet the voting will be close, but I’ll go with TSN over TKS.

Best Director: David Fincher for TSN.

Best Actor: Colin Firth.

Best Actress:  Natalie Portman

Best Supporting Actor: Christian Bale. His performance in TF was riveting. I think Bale is the best actor working right now. This will be his first Oscar, but not his last.

Best Supporting Actress: Melissa Leo.

Back to Blogging

Holy smokes, it has been over a month since my last post on this blog! Hmmmm, I can’t think of any single reason for that. I guess it has been a combination of things. Too busy sometimes, but certainly not all the time. Other times I think experienced some form of writer’s block or maybe I should call it “blogging block”. Anyway, I’m going to try to pick up the pace here a bit. There are a lot of topics I want discuss and throw in my two cents on.

NBA 2010-2011 season

I think the NBA season to date has been very interesting. Before the season started I would have predicted that the Lakers and Celtics would meet again for the championship. I’m going to stick with those picks, but it is clear that at least four or five other teams could end up in the championship round of the playoffs. Miami, Orlando and Chicago have to be considered threats in the East, while San Antonio and Dallas could end up taking out the Lakers.

I can’t believe that I am writing this, but the LA Clippers have become my favorite team to watch this year, primarily because of Blake Griffin. Griffin is the most exciting player to come into the league since LeBron James. I certainly agree with all the basketball pundits who predict Griffin will be rookie of the year. It is not even close. Heck, he should be named to the All Star game imo.

I’m also please to see that the NY Knicks have finally assembled a decent team for the first time in a while. Hopefully they will remain above .500 and make the playoffs. The NBA just isn’t right when New York doesn’t have a good team. Amare Stoudemire has exceeded my expectations. I thought he had peaked in Phoenix, but he is playing like a top ten player.

iPad App Review: Art Authority

I purchased an app called Art Authority recently and I highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in art. The app enables you to display over 50,000 paintings and sculptures on your iPad.

The images of the art look great on the iPad and the app is well designed. It divides the art work into eight virtual rooms: Early, Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic, Impressionist, Modern, Contemporary and American.

I think this app is a bargain at a price of $9.99

I gave the app a rating of 5 stars on the iTunes Store.

Snowstorm

I’m visiting Easton, PA for the Holidays and I arrived just in time for the first big snowstorm of the winter. I actually enjoyed. It has been a few years since I have experienced this kind of weather. I don’t see this stuff back in San Diego.

BlogPress App

Test post. I just purchased the BlogPress app for my iPad.
This could prove to be quite useful to me. It seems to be pretty well designed. I will write a more extensive review on this app and some others
I recently purchased soon.

Gingrich ‘more inclined’ to run in 2012 – The Hill’s Ballot Box

Gingrich ‘more inclined’ to run in 2012 – The Hill’s Ballot Box.

Of course Newt is “more inclined” to run 2012, as will at least half a dozen prominent Republicans. Obama has created a very target rich political environment for GOP. I think there are several Republicans, including Gingrich, Romney and even Palin, who would all have a very good chance to win if they win the Republican nomination.

Ratings for New Films that I have seen this Fall

Here are the ratings I gave to new films on IMDb this fall:

The Town: 6 /10
Ben Afflick’s second effort as a director. I thought this was a good film, but one that was overrated by most of the critics IMO. The cast was excellent, but the story about Boston bank robbers (led by Afflick, who also stars) going after one last big score was too implausible. I was particularly impressed by Jon Hamm, who played an FBI Agent trying to bring down Affleck’s gang. I don’t watch Mad Men, but now I can see why Hamm has won so much acclaim.

Rebecca Hall also distinguished herself in this film, playing a bank employee who becomes a temporary hostage to the gang. She is subsequently released, but may hold the key to identifying them.

Wall St. II: 7/10
A good sequel, but it didn’t quite live up to the original. Michael Douglas again provided the stand out performance reprising his role as Gordon Gekko. The rest of the cast was solid. The story over simplified a lot, but it was timely. This film won’t go down as one of Oliver Stone’s best efforts, but it was an entertaining film.
Inside Job: 7/10
A very interesting examination of the financial crisis of 2008, although more biased than it should have been.
I thought the film placed disproportionate blame on Republicans for the crisis. On the other hand,  liberal Democrats such as George Soros and Barney Frank are depicted in favorable light (perhaps in part because they agreed to be interviewed for this film). To be fair, other Democrats, including Bill Clinton, Robert Rubin and Obama, are cited as leaders who were to blame as well, but overall Republicans seemed to be assigned more of the blame and I don’t think that was fair or accurate.
The Social Network: 8/10

I thought this film was simply excellent. So good that I may see it again soon. David Fincher and Arron Sorkin deliver a film that has to considered a favorite for multiple Oscars, including Best Picture. Funny thing is I’m not a big fan of Facebook. My FB account is deactivated and I barely used it when it was on. However, I thought the story of how Harvard undergrad Mark  Zuckerberg and a few of his classmates developed FB was quite fascinating. The film does not paint any of the major figures in an entirely positive light, but I think it probably presents a realistic account of the what happened.

This cast in this film was perfect. I think there are at least three or four young actors in this film that we will be seeing a whole lot more of in coming years. Jesse Eisenberg, playing Zuckerberg, was especially good.
