NFL Week 14

Still reviewing my picks for my Fantasy Football team, the Warthogs. The Hogs are doing very well this season, currently in 1st place in a 10 team league. This week I have found picking two QB’s the most challenging part of assembling my team because there so many good choices. At various times this week I have considered picking Brady, Brees, Farve, Warner, Rivers, Rodgers and Peyton Manning. They are all capable of having a big game this week. Not sure exactly who I’m going to go with, but I am sure that I will take one QB playing at home and one playing away.

Running Backs, on the other hand, were real easy this week. I’m going with Chris Johnson and Ray Rice.

Defense was also a no brainer, Baltimore at home against Detroit is my choice.

NBA 2009-2010 Finals prediction

Almost one-quarter of the NBA season has been completed and most of the teams that were expected to do well are doing well. Barring major injury I expect to see the Lakers and Magic meeting again in the Finals. I don’t think any team in the West can take out the Lakers, although Denver could give them a tough fight. In the end though, Nuggets don’t have the size to deal with the Lakers frontline. Phoenix is playing remarkably well. As usual, they have a potent offense, but will they be able to shut anyone down come playoff time? And will Nash be able to hold up for the whole season?

At this point I think the Magic are the best in the East. The addition of Vince Carter and Jason Williams has made them even more potent offensively. The Magic won’t run away with East because the Celts, Cavs and young Hawks will provide stiff competition, but the Magic are too deep this year for everyone else in the East. Vince Carter and Jason Williams make them significantly better than they were last year. Right now I still have to give the edge to the Lakers in a match up with the Magic, but that may change by the end of the regular season.

An Evening with John Cleese

I went to see John Cleese’s one man show at the Spreckles Theater on Wednesday, Nov. 18th. and I throughly enjoyed his performance. I’ve been a huge Monty Python fan since grade school so when I learned that Cleese was going to perform in San Diego there was no way I was going going to miss it. The show was a skillfully constructed retrospective of Cleese’s 50 year career that was both very funny and very interesting because of the eclectic nature of Cleese’s body of work. He covered everything from his performances on stage in London and New York, to his famous TV shows, including Monty Pythonand Fawlty Towers, to the Python films and A Fish Called Wanda.

UFC 105, Couture vs. Vera

There is only one UFC 105 fight that I am really interested in and that would be Randy Couture vs. Brandon Vera. Couture has dropped down to 205 lbs to fight in the LHW division and Vera should present him with a real challenge. Like Couture, Vera comes from a wresting background and has added other martial arts, such as boxing and BJJ, to his MMA skill set.

I think Couture is going win this fight, but I expect it to be a difficult fight for him and I think that it will go 3 rounds, with Couture winning by decision. I think Randy will try to test Vera’s chin early and often with strikes, but he will take to the ground to nullify Vera’s formidable kicking ability.

At some point Father Time will catch up to Couture and he will no longer be able to compete at the highest levels of MMA, but I don’t think that time has arrived yet, based on what I saw in Couture last two fights against Lesnar and Nogiera. He lost both of the those fights, but he fought well in both, against opponents who were significantly larger than him. That won’t be the case with Vera, with both men at the 205 lbs limit. Couture is about 6’1″, so 205 should be a very natural weight for him to fight at.

Where should the Chargers play?

Qualcomm Stadium

I saw a report yesterday on one the local San Diego News programs that city officials are now considering building a new stadium for the Chargers in the East Village section of downtown San Diego, a few blocks from Petco Park, home of the Padres. I really hope this idea becomes a reality because that location would be far superior to some of the suburban locations that have been suggested and certainly beats seeing Chargers move to another city.

I still think the best place to build a new stadium would be right next to Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley. I attended a Chargers game at the Q a few weeks ago and was reminded of the advantages of that location. It is a good spot because there is plenty of space for parking, good freeway access and mass transit access with a trolley stop right at the stadium. However, at this point it looks very unlikely that a new stadium will be built at the Qualcomm site for a variety of economic and political reasons. The best alternative would be a downtown location in my opinion and hopefully that will happen. If it does there is no doubt that we will see future Super Bowls hosted in San Diego.

iPhone vs Droid

Paid a visit to the local Verizon store to see the new much hyped Motorola Droid in person. It does indeed look like a solid entry for MOTO in the smartphone field. However, my initial impression of the Droid is that it is a bit overrated. It just doesn’t seem as user friendly as the iPhone. The Android OS seemed more complex than the iPhone OS and not in a good way. Moreover, the slide out physical keyboard is just OK imo. The buttons are rather small and I don’t see that keyboard as any big advantage. That said, I’m glad to see that Motorola is back in the game and that they have produced a decent phone again

The ad campaign for the Droid seems to be aimed at tech geeks and that is who the this phone will probably appeal to the most. At this point I don’t think the Droid will be a huge sales hit, but I think it will definitely develop a strong niche following. I’m glad the Droid is out there though because it will give Apple even more of an incentive to improve the iPhone.

The iPhone remains the best Smartphone imo, but the Droid should be another reminder to Apple that it cannot rest and must continue to improve the iPhone to keep it ahead of the pack.

UFC 104

Predictions: I think Lyoto Machida will defeat in Shogun Rua in the Light Heavyweight fight. Rua appears to be good condition again and poses a threat to Machida, but I have go with Machida in this fight because he is undefeated and has the skills to deal with anything Rua will throw at him imo. Right now I think there is only one fighter in the UFC that Machida would be an underdog to and that fighter is Anderson Silva.

In the Heavyweight bout I predict Ben Rothwell will defeat Cain Velasquez. This is a tough call because I have not seen Rothwell fight at all and I have only seen Velasquez once, in his fight against Kongo. I’m basing my pick on what I saw in that fight. Velasquez displayed his great wrestling ability against Kongo and that is what carried him to victory in that fight, but he also showed that he vulnerable to big fighters that punch hard. Kongo dropped Velasquez a couple times but could not capitalize on due to his lack wrestling ability. Once the fight went to the ground Velasquez was able to recover and gain the upper hand. Rothwell has extensive MMA experience and appears to be a much better all around fighter than Kongo and at 6′ 5″, 260 lbs he has a significant size advantage over Velasquez, who is 6’1″, 240 lbs. So, even though Rothwell is the underdog I think he can take Cain Velasquez.

I think both fights will be very competitive and hard fought. I expect both to end by KO or TKO.
